You can read the full job description and apply here—but we all know job descriptions don’t always tell the full story. That’s why we’ve pulled back the curtain to give you a real look at what this position entails and what it’s like to be part of YMCA Camp Immokalee.
Camp Immokalee Overview
Camp Immokalee is a year-round camp facility with:
- 10 weeks of overnight summer camp serving around 180 campers per week
- 10 weeks of summer day camp serving around 50 kids per week
- 2 weeks of staff training (one certification week and one training week)
- Seasonal overnight programs throughout the year, including Halloween Camp, Winter Camp, Spring Break Camp, Teen Weekend, Family Camp, and Women’s Wellness Weekend
- School’s Out Day Camps on days local schools are out
- Weekend retreats and rentals most weekends August-November and March-May, with lighter bookings December-February
Camp Immokalee has most of the popular camp activities (archery, BBs, canoeing, etc.) and specialized activities like horses, tubing, water sports, and a new Adventure Course. We’re located on Lake Brooklyn, a public lake.
We’re located in Keystone Heights, Florida, just an hour from Jacksonville and St. Augustine, a little under an hour from Gainesville, and two hours from Orlando. Keystone Heights is a small town in Clay County School District, with a heavily involved local community.
Our full-time team is small, and the recent departure of a married couple leave us hiring two key positions. During this process, we’ve identified the need for a few other part-time positions we believe we’ll be able to fill locally and quickly. See our proposed organization chart here. Be on the lookout for our groups and retreats/ACD job going up soon!
Being Camp Director
Our camp director will report directly to an on-site associate vice president (Allison Krabill) with oversight of all camp operations. The camp director will be responsible for the day-to-day of camp, including:
- Recruiting, hiring, training, and onboarding seasonal staff (including international staff)
- Planning schedules and activities for all kids camp programs
- Recruiting and retaining campers
- Communicating with camper families and ensuring top tier customer service and experience
- Managing program budgets (~$1.6M in revenue for summer overnight camp, smaller budgets for seasonal and day camp programs)
- Finding innovative ways to push Camp Immokalee and our programs forward
- Working with other First Coast Y branches and departments to support the overall Y
- Overseeing risk management and ensuring compliance with First Coast Y safety standards
- Collaborating with the facilities team to enhance camp infrastructure
- More
In this role, you’ll supervise a groups and retreats director/assistant camp director. The AVP will oversee this person from a groups and retreats side, and you’ll oversee them for day camp and overnight camp support.
Where We Are
Over the last few years, the First Coast Y has invested heavily in Camp Immokalee’s facilities, spending more than $3 million in the last 5 years. Facility-wise, we still have a long way to go, but the support is there.
Our overnight summer camp numbers began to grow greatly beginning in 2019 and saw steady growth throughout COVID-19. After Summer 2023, numbers began to decline – partly because of program and communication issues, and partly because of price increases. We’re on a mission to refresh our programs, re-engage families, and bring new energy to Camp Immokalee. The right leader will have the chance to make a huge impact in shaping our next era. Our off-season overnight camper numbers and day camp numbers have declined slightly but not at the same rate of our overnight summer camp.
While not ACA accredited, we follow extremely high safety standards from the First Coast Y. Safety and risk management are a strength of ours. Our program, however, needs innovation and new life.
Who We’re Looking For
We need a visionary leader who is:
✔ Passionate about camp life and youth development
✔ Innovative and solution-oriented, ready to breathe new life into programs
✔ Experienced in camp leadership, with a track record of building strong staff and camper communities
✔ A self-starter, able to thrive with independence and responsibility—especially with our AVP out on a short break in June/July to welcome a new baby (but still just a text or call away – we promise!).
If you’re looking for a place where you can make a real difference, lead with purpose, and create unforgettable camp experiences, this is it.
The First Coast Y
We’re part of the larger First Coast Y association based in Jacksonville, with 16 branches throughout the First Coast region. We’re 45 minutes from the nearest branch (Dye Clay Family YMCA) and an hour from our metro office.
Our association offers us great support in accounting, HR, marketing, risk management, aquatics, and more. We support the association by promoting membership, taking part in association activities, serving on committees and task forces, and contributing financially to support other Y programs.
