Why We’re Asking for Blister Packs: Making Medication Safer and Simpler at Camp
At Camp Immokalee, we’re committed to keeping campers healthy and safe—and for those who take daily medications, that means making the administration process smooth, accurate, and stress-free.
That’s why we’re asking families to send prescription medications in blister packs this summer whenever possible.
What’s a Blister Pack?
A blister pack is a sealed package of medication that separates doses by day and time. Think of it as a custom-labeled pill calendar: your child’s meds are pre-sorted, pre-dosed, and organized just like they need to be for camp.
It looks like a clear plastic sheet with pop-out bubbles labeled with dates and times—just like the weekly pill organizer many people use at home, but sealed and prepared by a pharmacist.
Why We’re Asking for Blister Packs
Blister packs make a big difference in:
- Accuracy: No guessing, no double-checking loose bottles, and no chance of missed or mixed-up doses.
- Speed: Health staff can dispense meds more efficiently, which means campers spend less time waiting and more time playing.
- Safety: Fewer handling steps, fewer loose pills, and less risk of error during med rounds.
- Compliance: Camp staff are able to quickly verify that all doses are accounted for and administered as directed.
This is one of the biggest things families can do to help us care well for their camper.
Where to Get Medications Blister Packed
Many local and national pharmacies can provide blister packs upon request—especially if you ask early. Here are a few options to try:
- Your child’s regular pharmacy (especially independent or locally owned ones)
- Chain pharmacies like Walgreens, CVS, or Publix (services vary by location)
- PillPack by Amazon Pharmacy (for some prescriptions, depending on timing and insurance)
- Ask your pediatrician or prescriber for recommendations in your area
When calling, say something like: “My child is attending overnight camp and we need their daily medications packaged in a pharmacist-prepared blister pack, sorted by date and time. Can you help with that?”
What If We Can’t Get a Blister Pack?
We get it—not every pharmacy offers this, and sometimes it just isn’t feasible. If you’re unable to get a blister pack, that’s okay.
In that case, you must send medications in their original prescription packaging, with clear instructions and labeling from the pharmacy.
We cannot accept loose pills in baggies, weekly organizers filled at home, or unmarked containers. These create safety risks for your camper and for others.
Over-the-Counter Medications
OTC medications (like allergy meds or supplements) should also be in original containers with your camper’s name written clearly on the bottle.
If your child takes multiple supplements or vitamins daily, ask your pharmacy if they can be included in the blister pack. If not, send them in clearly labeled bottles.
